Creating a Feature

Workflow: Creating a Product Feature

Overview

This guide walks you through the complete process of defining, planning, and tracking a new product feature using the Product App. You will create a goal to measure success, add an initiative to your roadmap, and link projects for execution tracking.

Time Required: 15-20 minutes Skill Level: Intermediate

Prerequisites

Before starting this workflow, ensure you have:

  • An existing product in the Product App
  • Contributor or Owner role for the product
  • Access to the Projects App (for linking projects)
  • Clear understanding of the feature you want to create

Workflow Steps

Step 1: Define the Feature Goal

Start by creating a strategic goal that defines what success looks like for this feature.

  1. Navigate to your product detail view
  2. Click the Goals tab
  3. Click the Add Goal button

Add Goal Button

  1. Fill in the goal details:
FieldExample Value
TitleLaunch Mobile App v2.0
DescriptionRedesigned mobile experience with improved onboarding and performance
CategoryGrowth

Due Date2026-Q3
  1. Click Save to create the goal

Step 2: Add Success Metrics

Attach measurable metrics to track feature success.

  1. Open the goal you just created
  2. Click Add Metric

Add Metric

  1. Create 2-3 key metrics:

Metric 1: User Adoption

FieldValue
NameMobile App Downloads
TypeCount
Start Value0
Target Value50,000
Current Value0

Metric 2: User Satisfaction

Current Value3.5

Metric 3: Performance

FieldValue
NameApp Load Time
TypeCustom
Unitseconds
Start Value4.0
Target Value1.5
Current Value4.0
  1. Save each metric

Step 3: Create the Roadmap Initiative

Add the feature to your product roadmap.

  1. Navigate to the Roadmap tab
  2. Click Add Initiative or click the + button in the target quarter column

Add Initiative

  1. Fill in the initiative details:

Step 4: Plan with Child Goals (Optional)

Break down the main goal into smaller, actionable key results.

  1. Return to the Goals tab
  2. Click Add Goal again
  3. Select the parent goal you created in Step 1

Create child goals for each major component:

Child Goal 1: New Onboarding Flow

  2. Click on your initiative card to open details
  3. Click Link Project

Link Project

  1. Search for existing projects or create new ones:

Step 6: Assign Team Responsibilities

Define who is responsible for the feature.

  1. Navigate to the Team tab
  2. If not already added, add relevant team members
  3. Switch to RACI View

RACI View

  1. Create a RACI area for this feature:

    • Click Add Area

  2. Assign RACI roles:

StakeholdersI (Informed)

Step 7: Track Progress

As work progresses, update the tracking elements.

Update Goal Progress

  1. Go to Goals tab
  2. Click on your feature goal
  3. Update metric current values as progress is made
  4. Update goal status as appropriate:
    • Not Started -> In Progress (when work begins)
    • In Progress -> On Track (if progressing well)
    • In Progress -> At Risk (if behind schedule)
    • On Track -> Complete (when delivered)

Move Initiative Through Statuses

  1. Go to Roadmap tab
  2. Drag the initiative card:
    • Backlog -> Planned (when scheduled)
    • Planned -> In Progress (when started)
    • In Progress -> Done (when complete)

Or use the Kanban View for easy status-based management.

Expected Results

After completing this workflow, you should have:

  • A strategic goal with success metrics tied to your feature
  • An initiative on your product roadmap scheduled for a specific quarter
  • Child goals breaking down the work (optional)
  • Linked projects connecting strategy to execution
  • RACI assignments clarifying team responsibilities
  • A clear tracking mechanism for monitoring progress

Feature Complete

Verifying Your Work

Check that everything is properly connected:

  1. Goals Tab: Your feature goal appears with metrics and child goals nested below
  2. Roadmap Tab: Your initiative appears in the correct quarter with linked projects visible
  3. Team Tab: RACI area shows clear accountability assignments
  4. Activity Tab: Creation events are logged for all new items

Troubleshooting

Issue: Goal not appearing in hierarchy

Solution: Ensure you selected the correct parent goal when creating child goals. Edit the child goal to update the parent if needed.

Issue: Initiative not linking to projects

Solution: Verify that projects exist in the Projects App and belong to the same organization. If the project list is empty, create the projects first.

Issue: RACI warnings persist

Solution: Each RACI area needs exactly one Accountable person and at least one Responsible person. Review assignments in the matrix.

Tips for Success

  1. Start with the goal: Always define success criteria before planning execution
  2. Keep metrics measurable: Use specific, quantifiable targets
  3. Link everything: Connect goals, initiatives, and projects for full traceability
  4. Update regularly: Keep progress current for accurate health indicators
  5. Communicate via activity: Use the activity feed to understand what changed and when
